Patent Pending

Arnold MK 1
Arnold Mk.1 is designed to allow a single person to safely remove and replace a variety of manhole, duct and trench covers. It has a safe working load of 125kgs. The effort required to manually operate the equipment is minimal.

Features and Benefits

The device is designed to fold into a compact size making it easy to store and transport. It can also be manoeuvred in its storage mode.

The pivoting bearer beam allows the lid to remain horizontal during the removal and replacement process (see figure 2 in the 'Lifting' section below.).

There are a variety of stock lifting keys available for use with most covers encountered in the UK. However should you have a specifi c key requirement then this can be easily manufactured and supplied.

The wheels are 260mm diameter with pneumatic tyres allowing the device to be travelled across a gravelled surface.
{note: the device is not designed to travel across rough terrain whilst fully loaded}

Specifications and Resources

1 To operate, the device should be manoeuvred into position whilst in its storage mode. Consideration should be given to where the lid will be stored once it has been removed and the amount of space needed to safely assemble and operate the device (see figure 1.).
2 The pivoting bearer beam (see figure 2) should be parked over the lifting eyes on the lid to be removed. The lifting keys (supplied with unit) should then be guided through the centre of the bearer beam and located into the lid below. To secure, the keys should be rotated 90¡ and the locking nuts wound down tightly onto the bearer beams. Only when this operation has been completed should the arms of the device be unfolded and locked in position by a catch on the left hand side of the unit.
3 The lid is now ready to be removed. To operate, the arms of the lifting device should be forced down and the lid gently lifted out.
4 Once the lid has adequate clearance, the entire assembly can be wheeled backwards so that the removed lid can be safely stored on an adjacent ground. Should the lifting device need to be detached from the lid then timber packers should be used to allow the removal of the lifting eyes (NOTE: the arms of the device should be folded back into its storage mode (figure 3) before the lifting eyes are removed).
5 To return the lid, the device should be lined up and simply wheeled forward until the lid is above the correct position and then lowered gently by allowing the arms to lift. The arms should be returned to storage mode before the lifting eyes are removed.
